More Holiday Wellness Tips: Eating over the Holidays

More Holiday Wellness Tips:  Eating over the Holidays

This is often a time when we eat too much and some of the rich food does not always agree with us.  Here are a few simple suggestions to keep your digestion healthy.

In the morning shortly after rising, drink warm or hot water, with 1/4 to 1/2  freshly squeezed lemon mixed in it.  This wakes up your digestive system.

Please avoid ice cold drinks!  They are hard on your digestion.  Warm spiced drinks are good.

Before eating, take a few slow deep breaths and express gratitude or say a silent prayer if that is your practice.  Eat more slowly and pay attention to the smell, feel and taste of the food.   Follow the principle we were taught as kids not to talk with your mouth full.   Do not eat if you are angry or frustrated with someone.

If you overindulged or just to keep your digestion strong, consider making CCF tea (coriander, cumin and fennel) with ginger.  CCF tea has many benefits.  Besides aiding digestion, it promotes internal cleansing and stokes the metabolism and digestive fire.  It restores vitality and is soothing and calming for the mind.  Drink it in between meals.

CCF TEA
Mix equal parts cumin, coriander and fennel seeds together, and store in a glass jar. To make the tea, put 1 teaspoon of the mixture in a small saucepan, and dry roast the seeds on low heat until you smell a nice aroma, but do not burn them. It may take 30 seconds to 1 minute. Add 3 cups of cold filtered water to the pot, bring to a boil, add 1 to 2 t of chopped fresh ginger, cover and simmer for about 5 minutes. Turn the pot off, and let sit for at least 5 minutes before drinking. If you like it a tad sweet, add a little maple syrup or raw honey after it has cooled down a bit.  Strain, and enjoy.

Have Happy and Healthy Holidays!
