Staying Healthy in the Transition from Summer to Fall
As the summer heat gives way to the cooler, drier air of fall, it is
important to nourish our bodies and insure a smooth and stable seasonal
transition. We want to expel the heat from our body and soothe the nervous
system. Here are a few simple tips to ease our way into autumn.
Have regular meals, and add more cooked greens to your diet. In between
meals, snack on apples or pears, say at about 10 am and 2 pm.
Make sure to use a neti pot and use nasya oil after to keep the nasal
passages moist.
Take time to relax, especially in the afternoon. Do a restorative pose or
savasana for at least 10 minutes. You could also do a guided relaxation
practice or yoga nidra.
Consider doing a few days of a kitchari cleanse to nurture and rejuvenate
yourself and strengthen your digestive system. I will post a seasonal recipe for
kitchari soon: stay tuned!
For more information and for instructions on doing a fall cleanse
consider coming to a workshop that I am giving with Debbie Martin at the
Yoga Center of Columbia on Saturday, October 3 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm! Details at
www.columbiayoga.com.
Enjoy and welcome this change of seasons!
