Restorative poses should be part of our
regular routine! When we take the time to practice a
relaxing pose, even for just 5 minutes a day, it helps relieve
the effects of stress on our body and mind.
My favorite restorative pose to
practice in the winter is a version of Reclined Butterfly Pose (Supta
Baddha Konasana). This is especially beneficial during the
winter because this is the time of year when we often get colds and
congestion. I practiced it for 10 to 20 minutes
daily when I was recently sick. It helps open up the chest,
abdomen and pelvic area, allowing us to let go and surrender,
letting the props and earth support us. It is very calming and
relaxing for the nervous system.
Here are 2 pictures of me in the
pose. You will need a bolster (definitely worth the
investment), 2 blocks and 3 blankets or 2 blankets and a pillow. One
block is on the highest height and the other block is flat and leaned
up against the tall block. The blocks support the bolster. One
blanket you open up to lie on, with your bottom close to the base of
the bolster. Your feet are in butterfly pose with the souls of your feet
together. A second blanket is opened and rolled up to support your
knees and thighs, starting on top of your feet and then under your
thighs. A third blanket or pillow supports your head. Enjoy!
